Development and validation of the global surface type dataproduct from S-NPP VIIRS

چکیده
Accurate representation of actual terrestrial surface types at regional to global scales is an important element for many applications. Based on National Aeronautics and Space Administration Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer land cover algorithms, a global surface-type product from observations of the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on board the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership, provides consistent global land cover classification map for various studies, such as land surface modelling for numerical weather predictions, land management, biodiversity and hydrological modelling, and carbon and ecosystem studies. This letter introduces the development and validation of the VIIRS global surface-type product using the land cover classification scheme of the International GeosphereBiosphere Programme. Surface reflectance data from VIIRS were composited into monthly data and then into annual metrics. The C5.0 decision tree classifier was used to determine the surface type for each pixel in a 1 km grid. To quantitatively evaluate accuracies of the new surface type product, a visual interpretation-based validation was performed in which high-resolution satellite images and other ancillary data were used as the reference. The validation result based on the large validation data set indicated that (78.64 ± 0.57)% overall classification accuracy was achieved. Validation of S-NPP VIIRS Sea Surface Temperature Retrieved from NAVO
The validation of sea surface temperature (SST) retrieved from the new sensor Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) onboard the Suomi National Polar-Orbiting Partnership (S-NPP) Satellite is essential for the interpretation, use, and improvement of the new generation SST product. In this study, the magnitude and characteristics of uncertainties in S-NPP VIIRS SST produced by the Nav...
متن کاملQuality Assessment of S-NPP VIIRS Land Surface Temperature Product
The VIIRS Land Surface Temperature (LST) Environmental Data Record (EDR) has reached validated (V1 stage) maturity in December 2014. This study compares VIIRS v1 LST with the ground in situ observations and with heritage LST product from MODIS Aqua and AATSR. Comparisons against U.S. SURFRAD ground observations indicate a similar accuracy among VIIRS, MODIS and AATSR LST, in which VIIRS LST pre...

The nighttime light data records artificial light on the Earth’s surface and can be used to estimate the spatial distribution of the gross domestic product (GDP) and the electric power consumption (EPC). In early 2013, the first global NPP-VIIRS nighttime light data were released by the Earth Observation Group of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Geophysical Data Center...

Suomi NPP (National Polar-orbiting Partnership) satellite (http://npp.gsfc.nasa.gov/viirs.html) began to daily collect global data following its successful launch on October 28, 2011. The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) is a key NPP sensor. Similar to the design of the OLS, SeaWiFS and MODIS instruments, VIIRS has on-board calibration components including a solar diffuser (SD)...
